April 24 ceremony will honor Virginia Tech

April 20, 2007

KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo will honor the memory of those who lost their lives at Virginia Tech University with a brief ceremony on Tuesday, April 24. The ceremony will begin at 5:15 p.m. in Alumni Hall. It will immediately precede the 5:30 p.m. Angel Walk/Take Back the Night Rally against domestic violence.

“On this night when the IU Kokomo community takes a stand against all person-to-person violence, we wanted to express our sympathy for and solidarity with our fellow university in Virginia,” said Chancellor Ruth Person. “I invite all of the campus and greater community to join in this moment of remembrance.”

During the ceremony, a student representative will read the names of those who died April 16 at Virginia Tech. Chancellor Person and Student Body President John Vieke will speak briefly, and a moment of silence will be observed.

Students, faculty, and staff will be encouraged to sign an IU flag and a commemorative quilt to be sent to Virginia Tech. Ribbons will be sold, with proceeds being donated to the domestic abuse programs of Family Service Association of Howard County, Inc., in memory of those harmed at Virginia Tech.
