Early Childhood Fair: A time for fun and learning

April 9, 2008

Families of infants through third graders will enjoy fun and learning at the Early Childhood Fair, Tuesday, April 15, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Sycamore Elementary School in Kokomo. Educators and childcare providers are also welcome to the fair, coordinated by Indiana University Kokomo students majoring in early childhood education. Admission is free.

The Center for Early Childhood Education at IU Kokomo and the Head Start program at Sycamore Elementary are cosponsoring the fair. It is one of several local celebrations of the Week of the Young Child, April 13-19, a program of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. For this reason, Mayor Goodnight will be on hand to proclaim April 15 as the Day of the Young Child in Kokomo, Indiana.

The evening includes refreshments, games for young children, and opportunities for adult visitors to learn about kid-friendly community resources. The fair is geared to help parents be their child's best, first teacher. Approximately 35 exhibitors will be present to provide information regarding children’s health, activities for children, and other family supports.

Some of the exhibitors that will be present are About Special Kids (ASK), formerly the Indiana Parent Information; Big Brothers Big Sisters of north central Indiana; Child Care Solutions, child care resource and referral network; Dr. Judith Culver, dental health information; Family Service Association of Howard County, Inc., featuring Healthy families and more; Head Start, Early Head Start, and Migrant Head Start; Homefront Learning Center, preschool and First Steps; Kindermusik, with program information; Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, reading to children; The Center for Early Childhood Education at IU Kokomo, providing Totes for Tots and other educational support.

Representatives of the IU Kokomo Division of Education will be on hand to discuss the B.S. in Early Childhood Education degree program, engaging the community through Knowledge that Works. More information on IU Kokomo’s education offerings is available at www.iuk.edu/education or (765) 455-9441.
