IU KOKOMO LOCAL GEOLOGICIAL EXPERT READY WITH ANSWERS TO YOUR EARTHQUAKE QUESTIONS

April 18, 2008

If you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. The U.S. Geologic Survey reported that an earthquake struck the Midwest around 5:40 a.m. this morning with a preliminary magnitude of around 5.2 to 5.4. It further has been reported that the quake was centered near West Salem, Illinois about 40 miles north of Evansville, Indiana and was felt as far west as St. Louis, Missouri and as far north as Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

Lea Gilbertson, IU Kokomo local geologist expert, says that “Most earthquakes occur on the edges of tectonic plates, where stress is concentrated. Earthquakes in this region of the country occur in the middle of a tectonic plate and are typically the result of the release of energy caused by years of buildup of stress.”

Gilbertson holds a Master of Science in Geology and has spent over 10 years in the geological field of study. For more information please contact Lea Gilbertson, at lagilber@iuk.edu or call (765) 455-9453.
