IU Kokomo Well House Provides Showcase for Art, Literary, and Scholarly Work
April 10, 2008
The Well House, a collaborative showcase of art, literary, and scholarly work representing IU Kokomo, will present selected results of students’ research and creativity by students, faculty, and staff in journal form. A student produced and faculty guided publication, the Well House is an experiential and instructional endeavor with the purpose of taking students through the entire process of publication.
Beginning with the formation of the organization, through raising the funds for printing, determining the structure of the journal, setting up the double-blind review of submissions, and laying out the copy for printing, students move through the review and production process guided by faculty, which includes Eva White, Ph.D., the journal’s faculty advisor. “When I came here, I came with the idea of beginning a literary magazine. So I got together with Matt [Russell] at the AEI (Art Experience Integration) meetings and found a core of dedicated writers and artists among the student body. I want the IU Kokomo campus to stand on its own as a center of intellectual and creative growth for students, staff, and faculty. We want a journal that encompasses undergraduate research, writing, and artwork,” White explained. Instructors Gregory Steel and Karla Stouse have been key in guiding students.
The magazine will showcase research articles and the sciences as well as the arts, and Kathryn Holcomb, Ph.D., the director of undergraduate research at IU Kokomo, has been assisting with the project also. “It’s a very good asset to have for students. The research center’s goals are to help students to present their research and creativity,” Holcomb asserts.
The Well House has been meeting since early September 2007 with attendance open to all creative minds on campus. Chief Editor, Matt Russell, spoke of the beginnings of the organization and publication, “…when working with the AEI club; I brought up creating a literary magazine with poems and other types of writing… In this region of the Midwest there is not a lot of opportunity for a writer to become published.” The Well House has received approximately 80 submissions, which have been reviewed. Final decisions have been made, and, as of this writing, the magazine is in layout. The projected date of release is late April.
The next step for the organization is the establishment of a Web site for the Well House. For ways to get involved in the organization or contribute to the printing of this publication, please contact Matt Russell or Dr. Eva White at evawhite@iuk.edu.
