Freshman Learning Community converts courtyard into ‘artyard’
April 9, 2009
KOKOMO, Ind. – The Freshman Learning Community at Indiana University Kokomo plans to convert the Main Building’s courtyard into an “artyard” to draw attention to an underutilized area on campus, while demonstrating a unique art style.
“Altered Spaces – An Old Friend under Wraps” can be viewed beginning Friday, April 17, until Friday, April 24, during regular campus hours. The official opening will take place on Tuesday, April 21, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception.
“The students have worked together to come up with the design of the project to make this an intersecting work of art that showcases a great, but underappreciated, space on campus,” said Whitney Bair-Sneed, lecturer in fine arts and Art Gallery director.
The students are constructing the design with different wrapping techniques based on the work of a well-known environmental artist team, Christo and Jeanne-Claude. This artistic duo wraps large objects, such as islands or bridges, to emphasize the importance of these items in the environment.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
