‘Dancing for a Change’ to have Spanish dances, singing

April 23, 2009

KOKOMO, Ind. – Finish the semester with some fun and make a difference, too, during “Dancing for a Change,” taking place on Thursday, April 30, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Indiana University Kokomo’s Kelley Student Center, room 130. Organized by J.R. Pico, lecturer in Spanish, the event will bring in a dance instructor to teach students and community members lessons in the dancing styles of salsa, cumbia and merengue. The event is free; however “Dancing for a Change” will be taking donations for Ambassadors for Children.

Proceeds from the event will help finish a preschool classroom in Cartagena, Colombia through the international organization. This project began during a recent spring break trip to Cartagena where Pico led students from Purdue University and Miami University, Ohio, during a week of service learning.

In addition to dancing instruction, the third annual Spanish Singing Festival will take place. Students from several IU Kokomo Spanish classes will sing and entertain the crowd. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

For more information, contact Pico by e-mail at jrpico@iuk.edu or by phone at (765) 455-9320.
