April 30, 2009
Kokomo, Ind. – The Fourth Annual Take Back the Night/Angel Walk brought in record donations and walkers this week in what organizers are calling a successful effort to bring awareness and raise money for domestic violence. More than $7,600 was collected and nearly 350 people registered to walk at the event this past Tuesday at the Indiana University Kokomo campus.
“This far exceeded any expectations we had. This is the most we’ve ever raised,” said Kathryn Widman, coordinator of programming and applied learning at IU Kokomo. “This event would not be what it is without the support of our faculty, students, staff, and the community.”
Fifteen classes participated in the project, with the early childhood degree students raising the most at $2,655. This team, “Quarter by Quarter”, was led by faculty member Amber Reed, assistant professor of education.
Take Back the Night/Angel Walk is an annual event sponsored by the American Democracy Project at IU Kokomo and the Family Service Association of Howard County. It is an international rally and march that is organized in local communities with the purpose of spreading an awareness of all forms of violence and oppression against women, children, and families.
Other sponsors include Z92.5 radio and Coca Cola.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
