  Continuing Studies offers new Chinese language course

KOKOMO, Ind.—An eight-week course in modern-spoken Mandarin Chinese debuts this fall on the course roster for the IU Kokomo Division of Continuing Studies. Pupils will study 25 dialogues, presented in Chinese characters, in pinyin (the system of writing Chinese characters in the Roman alphabet) and in English translation.

Classes will meet Tuesdays, September 9–October 28, 6:30–8:30 p.m. The class fee is $129.

Access® Basics Access® contains tremendous depth and structure to create databases. Learn Access® methodologies as you investigate relational database design. Beginning Sign Language Ideal for family members, co-workers and others who want to learn to communicate with the hearing impaired using the American Sign Language method. Book required. Tuesdays, September 2–October 21, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $109
Photography Fundamentals This course will help you take pictures with confidence. Required equipment includes a 35mm adjustable camera (without film), a built-in light meter or hand-held meter and the owner’s manual. Wednesdays, September 3–24, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $99
PowerPoint® Basics Have you ever needed to create a presentation for work or help your children create presentations for school projects? With PowerPoint®, you can modify and customize backgrounds, set up individual styles and learn about outline and slide sorter formats. Thursday, September 4, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Fee: $99
German for Beginners Acquire the skills to speak and understand basic German. This class will develop pronunciation and basic vocabulary for everyday situations and travel survival. Thursdays, September 4–November 20, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Fee: $129
Computer Basics I Get to know the main parts of a computer, some simple computer terms and finding your way around the keyboard. This hands-on class will give you the foundation needed to move on to other computer classes. Mondays and Wednesdays, September 8–17, 9:30–11:30 a.m. OR Tuesdays, September 9 and 16, 5:30–9:30 p.m. Fee: $109
A+ Certification This 40-hour course covers software/hardware installations, system optimization, PC troubleshooting and customer service issues. Prerequisite: Six months of computer system support experience or equivalent. Book required. Mondays and Fridays, September 8–October 10, 5:30–9:30 p.m. Fee: $1,040
QuickBooks® Level I QuickBooks® software can help you manage expenses, analyze cash flow, compile balance sheet information and build a budget. Introduction to Human Resources: Generalist and Specialist This course reviews human resources policies and procedures, the Family Medical Leave Act, customer service and communication with upper management. Mondays, September 8–29, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $99
Power Yoga This invigorating stretching offers a light cardiopulmonary workout, increases body awareness and tones all muscles. Yoga can improve flexibility, balance and strength. Students should bring a towel and exercise mat to each class and dress comfortably. It is recommended that students not consume food 1–2 hours before class. How to Start Your Own Business Addresses the fundamentals of starting a business including licensing and permit information, business organization, insurance considerations, record keeping and accounting, market research, marketing and promotional planning and financial concerns. Mondays, September 8–November 3, 6–8 p.m. (No class on September 29.) Fee: $99
Pilates Matwork Achieve a balance between strength and flexibility using Pilates-based matwork. Movements will focus on the core muscles of the abdomen and back. It is recommended that students not consume food 1–2 hours before class. Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 9–25, 6–7 p.m. Fee: $98
General Law I This course acquaints students with several legal areas, including the legal system, legal thinking and basic rights and duties. Key concepts include ethics, legislation, trial and appellate courts, and state and federal courts. Tuesdays, September 9–December 2, 6:15–9:15 p.m. (No class on November 25.) Fee: $250
Criminal Law This in-depth review of the Indiana Criminal Code emphasizes applying the elements of crimes to factual situations. Tuesdays, September 9–December 2, 6–9 p.m. (No class on November 25.) Fee: $250
Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program This comprehensive, 42-hour program prepares you for entry-level ancillary pharmaceutical positions in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies or community pharmacies. Upon completion, you will have the knowledge needed to take the Indiana State Board Exam for Pharmacy Technicians. Prerequisite: High school diploma or G.E.D. A payment plan is available. Student must pay a non-refundable $20 certificate registration fee. Discounts do not apply to the certificate fee. Thursdays, September 11–December 18, 5:30–8:30 p.m. (No class on November 27.) Condensed Computer Basics Don’t let computer technology scare you. This 24-hour, hands-on class will dispel confusion and give you the foundation to move on to intermediate-level computer classes. Book required. Fridays, September 12–October 3, 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Fee: $259
The Measure of Success Methods taught in this class can help balance your career vision and goals with personal responsibilities and priorities. Wednesday, September 17, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $75
Computer Basics II Individuals who want to know more about computer operating systems, sharing files among programs, and basic shortcut operating functions should try this intermediate-level course. Personality and Listening Skills Improve your communication skills by discovering your personality traits, how others perceive you, and how well you listen. Wednesday, September 24, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $99
Painting with Watercolors for Beginners Using basic drawing or watercolor skills, you can paint from various subject matter to develop color knowledge and mixing techniques. Demonstrations show how to use different materials with watercolors to achieve desired effects. No experience necessary. Receive a supply list with paid registration. Wednesdays, September 24–October 15, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $89
Evening at the Observatory Gaze at the stars and planets with the telescope in Indiana University Kokomo’s Observatory. The class includes a lecture on the solar system and a chart of constellations in the northern hemisphere. Families are encouraged to attend together. All ages are welcome. (The $45 registration fee covers a family of up to four people. An adult must accompany any minors.) Saturday, September 27, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $45
Spanish for Beginners A first step to learn Spanish for work, travel or friendship, this class focuses on pronunciation, everyday vocabulary, phrase usage and basic grammar. Mondays, September 29–November 17, 10 a.m.–noon, OR Mondays, September 29–November 17, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $129
