History/Political Science degree introduced at IU Kokomo

August 22, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has approved a new Bachelor of Arts in History/Political Science degree at Indiana University Kokomo. It will replace the former bachelor’s degree offered in Social and Behavioral Science, which also included the disciplines of anthropology, psychology, and sociology.

During the past decade, IU Kokomo implemented separate degree programs in psychology and sociology. Similar to those degrees, the new program will permit students with interests in history and political science to pursue those two disciplines in more depth.

The program proposal suggests that the History/Political Science curriculum should “foster an understanding and appreciation of local, national, and international historical and contemporary events and issues, and . . . develop such skills as interpretative analysis, critical thinking, writing and research.” The program should prepare graduates for law school and other graduate studies, as well as teaching, government service, public administration, museum work, politics and public service, business, journalism, law enforcement, and work in non-profit organizations.

In classes starting this fall, History/Political Science majors will explore both subjects, but can select a track that emphasizes one of the two disciplines. The 120-credit-hour program requires 6 credit hours in introductory U.S. history and 30 credit hours in upper-level social and behavioral sciences course work. Under the history track, students will complete at least 21 of those upper-level credit hours in history (including a capstone seminar) and 6 hours in political science. The political science track reverses those numbers—a minimum 21 hours in upper-level political science and 6 hours in history.

A third track will allow students to obtain social studies certification under IU Kokomo’s secondary teacher education program.

The program will rely primarily on the resources of three full-time faculty:

• Professor of History Jon Kofas, Ph.D., specializing in European History, Modern Russia, Modern Middle East, Modern Latin America, and Modern U.S. Diplomatic Affairs

• Professor of History Allen Safianow, Ph.D., specializing in Twentieth Century U.S. History, U.S. Cultural and Social History, and American Studies

• Newly appointed Assistant Professor of Political Science Todd Bradley, Ph.D., specializing in International Relations, Comparative Politics, U.S. Immigration, and Africa

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Stuart Green extended his thanks and congratulations to Safianow, as principal author of the degree proposal, and to others who helped craft the new program: Bradley; Kofas; Social and Behavioral Sciences Chair Rick Aniskiewicz, Ph.D.; Chair of the Division of Education Loren Henry, Ed.D.; Professor of Political Science Emeritus Allen Maxwell, Ph.D., and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Sue Sciame-Giesecke, Ph.D.
