  Reynolds receives IUKAA Scholarship

August 28, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Indiana University Kokomo Alumni Association (IUKAA) has presented its 2003 scholarship to senior education major Megan Reynolds of Kokomo. The daughter of Dean and Marcia Reynolds, Megan graduated from Northwestern High School in 2000.

The scholarship will pay a major portion of Reynolds’ tuition for the 2003–2004 academic year, which she deeply appreciates. She also covers some school costs through her work as a waitress for the Windmill Grill. Receiving the scholarship holds additional significance, she said. “I’ll have a connection to the Alumni Association that will stay with me in future years.”

Reynolds said she chose education as her major because she loved working with children. “Ever since I was old enough to baby-sit, I knew that teaching was what I wanted to do.” She wants to teach in elementary grades, particularly grades 1–3. This summer at a local school, Reynolds helped teach youngsters ages 9–14 in a science class devoted to outer space. The experience proved that teaching can be “hard work and even frustrating at times,” Reynolds said. “But, in the long run, it will all be worth it.”

She draws career inspiration from her IU Kokomo professors and their “impressive” interest in their students. “It is not very often at a college campus that professors actually know their students’ names. I feel like I could go to any professor and ask for help,” Reynolds said.

Some of Reynolds’ favorite classes have included Educational Psychology, taught by Ellen Sigler, Ed.D., and Introduction to Psychology and Psychology of Gender and Ethnicity, taught by Kathy Holcomb, Ph.D. “[Sigler’s class] influenced my thinking about many levels of education,” Reynolds said.

“Megan demonstrated academic excellence in all aspects of my course,” said Sigler. “She had a very strong grasp of the subject matter and understood conceptually what it means to be a teacher.” Reynolds received the Dr. Lian-Hwang Chiu Scholarship for the 2002–2003 academic year, Sigler noted. “She is interested in professional development and has recently accepted membership in Pi Lambda Theta [an education honorary].”

The enthusiasm Reynolds’ brought to class assignments will help her succeed in teaching, Holcomb said. “She wrote a paper about gender bias in the classroom, which is something she is very motivated to avoid.”

Reynolds would eventually like to earn a master’s degree—possibly in school psychology—and a doctorate.

Megan will be the second of the Reynolds sisters to earn a degree at IU Kokomo. In 2002, her older sister Lindsay received a B.A. in Communication Arts. Youngest sister Erica is studying nursing in Fort Wayne.
