Denise Brehmer joins School of Nursing faculty
August 23, 2004 | |||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—Denise Brehmer of Peru has been appointed a Visiting Lecturer in Nursing at Indiana University Kokomo. Brehmer brings extensive experience in medical/surgical, pediatric and cardiac nursing to her new position on the School of Nursing faculty. This fall, she is teaching Med/Surg Clinical Experience and a lab course.
She has worked as a staff and agency nurse for hospitals and health care centers in Peru, Wabash and Rochester. She has also held administrative posts and worked in community health nursing. Brehmer has taught licensed practical nursing, gerontological nursing and nursing informatics in north central Indiana for 10 years. In spring 2004 semester, she taught a psychiatric lab for associate degree students at IU Kokomo. “I enjoy teaching clinical because it is such a joy to watch the students grow from novice to more experienced medical professionals,” she said. Nursing informatics covers the role of computer competency in the nursing profession, Brehmer explained. Bedside computers are used at many healthcare facilities to enter patient data, she said. Nurse managers and educators use Word®, PowerPoint® and other presentation software to develop and disseminate nursing policies and procedures. “Computers are the wave of the future in the health care field, and some nurses have never touched a computer, so the training is needed,” Brehmer said. Brehmer received a Master of Science in Nursing in 1999 from Ball State University. She also earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ball State (1986), and an Associate of Science in Nursing from IU Kokomo (1980). Brehmer is married with two daughters. She enjoys attending high school band competitions to watch her youngest daughter compete. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, volunteering and participating in church activities.
