KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo has hired Candy Norman for the new position of Assistant Director of Business and Community Outreach. Norman said her office’s primary focus “will be to build relationships with business owners and leaders in north central Indiana and speak to them about how IU Kokomo can assist them in the economic development of the region.” For example, faculty from the School of Business can consult on strategic planning, personnel development, or market analysis, she said. “Our M.B.A. and undergraduate students have already built business plans for area firms through an Indiana Small Business Development Center program. The School of Arts and Sciences has trained students in TV and video production, public relations and technical writing, who could help businesses with event planning and promotions.” Norman wants to actively promote similar, in-depth internships for all academic areas to the business community. “I am meeting with the deans now on what their faculty and students can offer,” she said. Funded in part by a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., the Office of Business and Community Outreach is part of IU Kokomo’s Division of Continuing Studies, directed by Fred Hakes. The new office will “strengthen collaborations with business and community to connect university expertise with business needs,” Hakes said. An experienced trainer, marketer, and grants manager in the life sciences, Norman “brings many strengths to the new office,” Hakes added. For the past five years, she has coordinated conferences, promotions, Web site creation, faculty development and other special projects for the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Medicine and its Chandler Medical Center. She tracked and managed grants valued at close to $1 million. Norman has presented numerous workshops and conference discussions related to the grants she managed, covering such topics as incorporating women health issues into medical curricula and gender discrimination in education. Norman holds a master’s degree in communications from UK and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and secondary education from Ball State University. A native of Kokomo, Norman taught Spanish at Northwestern High School in the early 1990s. Much of her family still live in the Kokomo area, Norman said, giving her “a sense of comfort” in returning home. “The place you are from is a part of you.” In a time when Hoosiers worry about a “brain drain” of college graduates taking jobs out of state, Hakes said, IU Kokomo is lucky to “get one back” in hiring Norman.
