Sadler, VanMeter take on new roles for Student Activities

August 3, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Aimee Sadler has joined the Office of Student Activities as Coordinator of Programming and Applied Learning. Student Activities also added a part-time administrative assistant, Teena VanMeter. Previously, a single programming coordinator handled both clerical and administrative functions.

An increase in student organizations and student involvement, and the desire to further connect student life with academic affairs, prompted the change, said Sarah Hawkins, director of student development and campus life. “With the new office organization, Aimee is able to dedicate her time and skills to advising students and fostering student involvement, and Teena is able to dedicate her time and skills to running our office effectively and efficiently. Before this separation of job duties, the work load was overwhelming at times for one person. This will allow us to further develop our programs and services.”

Sadler will advise student organizations and the Student Union Board as they schedule campus entertainment and social events. Under the “Applied Learning” portion of her title, Sadler will work with faculty and students to bring to campus special lecturers, displays, and other activities that complement course curricula. Such out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities stimulate student involvement and allow students to “interact with their professors on a more personal level,” Sadler said. “Creating a focus of engaging students civically is a growing trend on campuses.” Working with the IU Kokomo American Democracy Project committee, Sadler wants to develop activities that will connect students with the fall election process, including on-campus voter registration and local candidate forums planned October 20 and 27.

To serve IU Kokomo students who are also parents, a good portion of student entertainment is family fare, such as the October 23 Shana Banana Children’s Program and the October 29 Halloween Open House, Sadler said. (For more information, contact the Office of Student Activities, (765) 455-9203.)

Sadler holds a master’s degree in student affairs administration in higher education from Ball State University and a bachelor’s degree in public and corporate communications from Butler University. At Butler, she was named Top Female Student and Most Outstanding Greek Woman, in recognition of her campus involvement. She also worked for a year as a collegiate development consultant for Delta Gamma fraternity.

Teena VanMeter will handle scheduling, purchasing, Web site maintenance and other duties for the Office of Student Activities. A resident of Kokomo, VanMeter will continue her work as an English tutor in the campus’ Learning Enhancement Center.

Hawkins said VanMeter was selected for the job based on “her strong organizational skills, and her enthusiasm and experience in working with students.” VanMeter earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social and Behavioral Science from IU Kokomo in 2001.
