Large-scale sculptures on display at IU Kokomo Art Gallery
August 13, 2004 | |||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—The works of Herron School of Art faculty members Eric Nordgulen and William Potter will be on exhibit at the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery August 15–September 15. Both artists will be present for the August 15 opening reception from 2–4 p.m. Admission is free.
Both artists have created numerous large-scale sculptures, commissioned for public spaces. Nordgulen’s cast bronze and aluminum work is on display in several Midwestern cities, as well as at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Chicago’s Navy Pier. IU Kokomo Art Gallery Director Minda Douglas said Nordgulen blends organic and mechanical elements in his pieces. One sculpture he plans for the Kokomo exhibit shows an eight-foot tall bronze “tree” growing out of what looks like machine parts. His Corn of Plenty consists of aluminum strips, riveted in the shape of a large cornucopia. Circles of magnifying glass hang within it, distorting the viewer’s perspective of the space behind the piece, she said. Potter’s painted geometric wood sculptures are smaller and more vibrantly colored than Nordgulen’s pieces, making a pleasing contrast of style, said Douglas. “Potter’s pieces are raw forms that are very clean, detailed, and very formal in nature,” she said. Potter fits together different kinds of wood to make three-dimensional shapes. He then paints and draws on the wood to get the look he wants. Occasionally he applies an encaustic painting technique. This is a wax paint heated and applied to the wood, which brings a texture to the artwork. Nordgulen and Potter are both assistant professors of foundations at the Herron School of Art at IUPUI. Foundations coordinator at Herron, Potter teaches the basic core art classes. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Cincinnati and his bachelor’s degree at the Columbus College of Art Design. Nordgulen teaches sculpture for Herron. He received his Master of Fine Arts at Indiana University and his bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University. Sculpture and ceramics by Chad Michner, Emily Stegar and Robert Quade will appear in the Gallery’s Artist Spotlight windows during September. All are from Indianapolis. Michner and Stegar are students at the Herron School of Art, and have worked closely with Nordgulen. “Both are talented artists,” said Douglas. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. Call (765) 455-9523 or visit www.iuk.edu/artgallery.
