Four receive Mildred Stanley Scholarships
August 19, 2005
KOKOMO, Ind.—Amber Gibson of Flora, Elaine Chumbley of Peru, and Kokomo residents Andrea Burtch and Karie Lewis have received $500 Mildred Stanley Scholarships for the 2005–2006 academic year at IU Kokomo. Granted for academic achievement, the scholarships are renewable annually if the recipients maintain a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Up to four separate scholarships have been awarded annually since the scholarship was first awarded in the 2000–2001 academic year.
The children of the longtime Kokomo resident Mildred Stanley endowed the scholarship fund in their mother's memory. “We grew up poor, and no one in our family went to college,” said Dick Stanley, seventh of the nine Stanley siblings. His mother, he said, “never said anything bad about anyone. I thought it would be nice to honor her,” by endowing the scholarship.
Stanley worked at Delco Electronics for 38 years, before retiring in 1990. He moved to Florida in 1996; four of his sisters—Dot Adams, Sharlot Shallenberger, Jean Mullins, and Nancy Crooks—still live in Kokomo. Family members come to IU Kokomo annually to meet that year's scholarship recipients and offer encouragement for the students' future plans. “If supporting this scholarship helps someone get an education that might not get one, that would be nice,” Stanley said.
Karie Lewis has received a Mildred Stanley Scholarship for two of the three years she has attended IU Kokomo. Lewis is pursuing a bachelor's degree in management and human resources through the School of Business. The daughter of Scott and Jane Lewis of Kokomo, Lewis said she was “very appreciative” of the support the Stanleys provide to students. “They are a wonderful family, so down to earth.”
This is also the second Mildred Stanley Scholarship for sophomore Amber Gibson, who is completing undergraduate requirements in IU Kokomo's University Division while considering possible majors. Gibson said she is leaning toward a career in nursing or teaching in special education. She is the daughter of Mona and Ryan McClish of Flora and Joe Gibson of Lafayette.
The daughter of Mary and Mike Chumbley of Peru, Elaine Chumbley is a nursing major.
“It certainly has been nice knowing I have the scholarship money so I don't have to stress as much about paying for the fall semester,” Chumbley said.
Andrea Burtch expects to graduate from IU Kokomo in December with a bachelor's degree in sociology. She plans to enroll in the Master of Social Work program at IUPUI, and study in the program's leadership, health, and school social work concentrations. “I would like to work as a medical or public school social worker, with a community advocacy group, or go into social policy and research,” she said.
