WWII drama opens free movie series at IU Kokomo

August 29, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo recalls the decade of its founding with free showings of the World War II film From Here to Eternity Thursday and Friday, September 1 and 2. Scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center, Room 130, the movie is one of six being co-sponsored through April 2006 by the IU Kokomo Staff Council and the 60th Anniversary Committee.

From Here to Eternity is ranked No. 52 on the “100 Greatest Movies” list of the American Film Institute (AFI) and No. 20 in AFI's tally of cinema's “100 Greatest Love Stories.” Shot on location in Hawaii, including scenes at Schofield Army Base, the film looks at military life leading up to the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. Montgomery Clift plays an Army private cruelly punished for not boxing on his unit's team. Meanwhile, his captain's wife (Deborah Kerr) and second-in-command (Burt Lancaster) fall in love. Kerr and Lancaster's scene of kissing on a beach as waves crash over them has become a cinematic icon. The Village Voice Web site called it “the Eisenhower-era high-water mark of Hollywood sexual passion.”

The film garnered eight Oscars®, including Best Picture of 1953. Supporting actor statuettes went to Donna Reed, playing against her “good girl” image, and Frank Sinatra, making a career comeback as the conniving Maggio.

The black-and-white film runs 118 minutes. It is rated “Approved.”
