IU Kokomo presents The Fifteen Minute Hamlet
August 3, 2006
KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo and the Indiana University community will continue to reap the benefits of the spring 2006 Semester of Shakespeare during the upcoming Indiana State Fair. When IU contacted Assistant Professor of English Terri Bourus, Ph.D., about entertainment possibilities for Thursday, August 10, “IU Day at the Fair,” she was thrilled to call on the talents of the IU Kokomo theatre department and the campus’ Shakespeare Red Hat Team. Team members will perform Tom Stoppard’s
The Fifteen Minute Hamlet at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. on the Minstrel Stage in the Indiana State Fairgrounds’ Exposition Hall.
Associate Professor of Communication Arts Colin Black is directing the play, an abbreviated version of the famed Shakespearean tragedy. IU Kokomo students Monique Ethier, Tyrone Van Tattenhove, and Ed Faunce, along with alumni Carrie Luster, Mark Genovese, and John Surface, will perform multiple roles in this humorous send-up of the goings on at Elsinore Castle. Luster and Genovese live in Indianapolis; the rest of the cast, in Kokomo.
Black describes the play as having “all of Shakespeare’s words, only fewer. It fits into today’s lifestyle of fast music, fast food, and quick sound bites.”
Bourus said Stoppard’s version also reflects the genius of Shakespeare. “Hamlet, a play written more than 400 years ago, can be adapted, abbreviated, and continuously reinterpreted without losing the essence of what makes it Shakespeare,” she said. “This shorter version still shows Shakespeare’s deep understanding of the human condition and an appreciation of the joys of performance,”
On Saturday, August 19, the IU Kokomo Madrigal Singers under the direction of Lecturer in Music Cindy Ison will perform a selection of Renaissance music at 2 and 3 p.m. on the fairgrounds’ IU Boulevard. The IU Kokomo campus will also host a science booth at the fair on August 8 and 9, highlighting research on water quality conducted by Associate Professor of Biology Christian Chauret, Ph.D. For more information regarding “IU Day at the State Fair,” visit http://www.indiana.edu/~fair .
