Herbert’s message to IBE: Education creates opportunity
August 24, 2006
KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo and the Kokomo Chapter of Indiana Black Expo (IBE) have partnered to bring Indiana University President Adam Herbert, Ph.D., to speak with community leaders at IBE’s annual corporate luncheon on August 31. Scheduled 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Continental Ballroom, 920 Millbrook Lane, Kokomo, the luncheon is designed to bring the various segments of the Kokomo community together to help raise money for higher education scholarships.
President Herbert will talk about education as the key to opportunity for all races, but particularly for African Americans. “We are excited to have Dr. Herbert as the speaker for the event,” said Robert Hayes, IBE chapter president and IU Kokomo alumnus. “It is a pleasure and treat to host this gentleman who has distinguished himself in education and public service. We expect that his talk will be thought-provoking and informative.”
Dr. Herbert became the 17th president of Indiana University on August 1, 2003, and is the first black person to hold the position. He is professor of public administration in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences.
“Dr. Herbert has tackled some of the most serious problems facing education in the United States,” Hayes said. “It is our hope that he can share some insight on how to make our community and families better.”
Director of Campus Climate Catherine Barnes will bring several students to the luncheon. “What a great opportunity for these young people to see examples of successful minority business and civic leaders, and an outstanding African American educator such as Dr. Herbert,” she said.
Following the luncheon, President Herbert will spend the remainder of the afternoon at IU Kokomo, meeting with faculty and staff, students, and the Chancellor’s Advisory Board, as well as area news media.
