IU Kokomo observes 9/11 anniversary

August 31, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo will mark the fifth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States with its annual “Remembering September 11” ceremony. The public and campus community are welcome to participate in the 9:30 a.m. memorial, staged by the flagpole in front of the campus’ Main Building.

Indiana State Representative John Smith of Kokomo and IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person will deliver brief remarks. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152, along with area firefighters and police, will lead salutes to the victims and heroes of 9/11. Musical tributes will be performed by David Britton and Hope Oaks.

The American Democracy Project sponsors the ceremony, along with the Office of Student Development and Campus Life. Director Sarah Hawkins said, “The commemoration has become a very meaningful ceremony to our entire campus community. It is an event which unites students, faculty, and staff in a common cause.”

In case of rain, the ceremony will move to Alumni Hall. Persons without campus parking permits should follow signs to visitor parking. For more information, call (765) 455-9203.
