KOKOMO, Ind.—Nursing student Donald R. Andrews of Kokomo has received the first Ambassador of the Year Award at IU Kokomo. Coordinated by the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Alumni Relations, Student Ambassadors serve as volunteer hosts for key university events on and off campus. Andrews “truly epitomizes the Student Ambassador Program,” said Director of Student Development and Campus Life Sarah Hawkins. “He is an outstanding student, a leader on campus and a tireless volunteer. He has always been willing to go above and beyond the expectations we have set for our Ambassadors, signing up for extra events or filling in when his help was needed. He frequently stops in the office to see if we need assistance with an event or a special project, and he always has a very positive outlook and attitude.” Director of Alumni Relations Cathy Hightower noted that Andrews has a special talent that shines in his Ambassador duties—the ability to converse comfortably with people of all ages. “He can talk with older adults and high school students alike. That’s unusual in someone his age.” One of twenty-two Ambassadors selected for the 2003–2004 academic year, Andrews is in his second year with the group. “I chose to become a part of the Ambassadors program in hope of increasing my involvement on campus,” said Andrews. “Through volunteering, I’m able to interact with a number of different people and gain experiences that should benefit me in the future as I head out into a professional career.” Andrews is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at IU Kokomo. He plans to earn a second bachelor’s degree in biology, with the intent of becoming a special forces medic with the U.S. Army. “Through my military career, I’ll gradually work toward an M.D. and a Ph.D. in pathology,” Andrews said. He also hopes to run for Indiana state representative sometime in his future. Ambassadors assist at such annual events as the Scholarship Gala, Halloween Open House, VIP Days, Economic Outlook Breakfast, Enhancing Minority Attainment Conference, Honors Day, Old Ben 5K Run, Cosmic Bowling and Commencement.
