KOKOMO. Ind.—From Bach and show tunes to marches and contemporary compositions, the IU Kokomo Howard County Community Band will perform a range of music as varied as its membership. Launching its second season January 14, the band welcomes all area instrumental musicians, from juniors in high school on up. “There are no auditions. If you have an old instrument in the closet that you haven’t played for years, dust it off and join us,” said Cindy Ison, a lecturer in music at IU Kokomo. She and Eric Thornbury are co-coordinators of the band; Thornbury directs. The band will meet each Wednesday from 6–9 p.m. in the band room of Kokomo High School (KHS) South Campus. Weekly practices will lead to a spring concert, but the band’s main aim is “just to have a lot of fun,” Ison said. Qualified IU Kokomo students can earn 2 credit hours in humanities by participating in the band (course number X040). Grades will be determined by attendance, attitude, dedication, performance and participation in the final concert. The university has arranged tuition scholarships for recommended KHS players. In 2002, more than 30 instrumentalists participated in the community band, including IU Kokomo students and employees, engineers from Delphi Delco and high schoolers. Their common interest in music sparked easy interaction between the generations, said. Ison. “It was neat to see how they would help each other. There didn’t appear to be too many egos.” A $30 registration fee covers sheet music and other operational expenses. Musicians must provide their own instruments, although the high school will offer some large brass instruments—English and French horns, tubas and baritones — for rent at $25 per semester.
