No holiday break for online registration at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind.—Long lines to register for classes have grown scarce at Indiana University Kokomo. Most IU Kokomo students are registering for spring and summer 2005 classes online, through the IU OneStart® Web portal, www.onestart.iu.edu. And, that means that registration will not shut down when the campus goes on winter break December 24–January 2. Admitted IU Kokomo students can register in the Self-Service section of OneStart® anytime up to Wednesday, January 5. Spring classes begin Monday, January 10. OneStart® also allows admitted students to add or drop classes, record address changes, and put themselves on “wait list” for classes that have already reached maximum enrollment. Initiated in fall 2004, the online process lets students register from almost any place with Internet access, said Enrollment Information Technician Tina Stone. “The system is Windows-based, and easy to use. We've given students much more flexibility.” Occasionally, someone attempting to register from a business site has been stopped by security firewalls on the business' system, Stone noted. But, access is readily available through personal computers and those in the campus' Information Commons. Once students have registered online, they can click a link to view details of their account with the campus' Office of the Bursar. “Before, you had to wait overnight to see what you owed,” Stone said. Students can pay course fees and tuition online with checks or credit cards. “About the only reason to come in [to the Registrar or Bursar's offices] is to pay in cash,” she said. For a good online registration experience, the Office of the Registrar staff suggests the following: • Before registering, view any “holds on records” you might have—that is, any past due bills or other obstacles to registration. A “Hold on Records” link is available on every channel of OneStart®'s Self-Service section. • Immediately after registering, click on the “Bursar's Account” link to see what you owe. • When you register online for a student parking permit at IU Kokomo, be sure to click “Save” to end the process. Some students have left the parking registration site without saving and were left off the mailing list for distribution of the permits. • If you know you want to take classes in summer 2005, register now to get the classes you want. Summer 2005 open registration continues now through May 5. Students can receive a 100 percent refund of all credit hour and directly related fees if they withdraw from courses during the first week of the semester, January 10–14. The percentage of refunds decreases on a sliding scale through subsequent weeks. New undergraduate students planning to enroll in credit courses at IU Kokomo must be admitted to the university before registering for classes. For information on undergraduate admission, including requests for applications and counseling appointments, contact the Office of Admissions at (765) 455-9217. New students seeking to take graduate level courses should contact the respective division for admissions information. Assistance from the Office of the Registrar is available Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., in Kelley Student Center, Room 208, or by calling (765) 455-9391.
