Ulery wins gold in Speech Olympics

December 17, 2004

KOKOMO, IND.—Joe Ulery of Logansport was the gold medal finalist in the November 18 Speech Olympics at Indiana University Kokomo. The communication arts major received a $150 cash prize from the School of Arts and Sciences for presenting the best short speech of the evening.

Six contestants competed in the Olympics, selected earlier in the week as the best presenters in three public speaking classes.

Ryan White of Noblesville won the silver medal and $100. A student of the Purdue University School of Technology Kokomo on the IU Kokomo campus, White is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering technology.

Bronze medal honors and a $50 prize went to Kristine Caryn Zeller, a business major from Peru.

Maggie Lees of Peru finished fourth; Debbie Branham of Kokomo, fifth; and Jason Sutherland of Converse, sixth. Branham is studying business, and Sutherland is pursing a history/political science degree. Lees is a student at Maconaquah High School, who is taking classes at IU Kokomo.

Kokomo Mayor Matt McKillip, State Representative Jim Buck, former area legislator Ron Herrell, and IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person judged the competition.

Lecturer in Communication Arts Jaime Howell coordinated the Speech Olympics. She is also coaching a new student speech and debate team at IU Kokomo. Howell expects team members to be competing in intercollegiate tournaments by spring.
