Kinney places first in Speech Olympics

KOKOMO, Ind.—Rebekah Kinney, an accounting major from Kokomo, was chosen as best presenter in the Speech Olympics December 5 at Indiana University Kokomo. Kinney won “gold” honors and an academic grant of $150 for her original 10-minute speech on “The Environment and Tobacco Smoke.”

Logansport biology major Dannette Mainville received the second place silver prize of a $100 grant. She spoke on the issue of “Human Sex Trafficking.”

The third place bronze prize, a $50 grant, went to Khala Woodcock, a nursing major from Converse, whose topic was “Organ Donation.”

Kim Carpenter, a nursing major from Converse, placed fourth, with her presentation “When Hansel and Gretel Were Thin.” Katie Oliver, who also addressed “Human Sex Trafficking,” placed fifth; she is a nursing major from Noblesville.

The Department of Humanities in the School of Arts and Sciences coordinated the Speech Olympics, drawing top students from public speaking courses.
