Campus to test emergency notification system

December 4, 2008

Kokomo, Indiana – Indiana University Kokomo will conduct a test of its emergency notification system, known as IU Notify, on Tuesday, December 9, at 11 a.m.

During the test, messages will be sent via phone, text message, and e-mail to all IU Kokomo students, faculty, and staff.

It is advised that everyone associated with the campus make sure their contact information is updated in IU Notify by 9 p.m. on Monday, December 8. Users can log onto the IU OneStart portal at https://onestart.iu.edu/my2-prd/portal/104181.

“In the event of an emergency affecting this campus, the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are of paramount importance,” said David Selby, director of campus safety and security and Chief of Police. “The system depends upon cooperation from all of us to make sure contact information is accurate and up-to-date. I urge everyone who has not signed up for emergency notification to do so.”

IU Notify is the integrated communications system that would be used in the event of an emergency or critical incident on campus. The system allows customized messages that would be activated for an emergency or incident that involved or threatened death or serious injury to people, or damage to, or significant disruption of, university operations. The emergency notification system will be used to announce and provide guidance in an emergency or critical incident and to communicate relevant updates.

The test is in line with the requirements outlined in an amendment to the Clery Act, which President George W. Bush signed on August 15, 2008. One requirement of the higher education act is that all emergency response and evacuation procedures be tested on an annual basis. This is the first test for the Kokomo campus.

The Emergency Operations committee will meet following the test to identify any technical points that need to be resolved.

Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
