Emergency notification test a success
December 11, 2008
Kokomo, Indiana – The Indiana University Kokomo campus on Tuesday successfully completed its first test of IU-Notify, the campus-wide emergency notification system.
More than 11,000 test messages were sent via phone, text message, and e-mail to all IU Kokomo students, faculty, and staff. Some recipients may have received notification more than once, depending on what means they selected to have the message delivered.
Results show 83 percent of all contacts received notification within the first five minutes, while 89 percent of registered contacts received the test message by phone within the first minute. Also, a total of 5,893 e-mails were sent as well as 422 text messages.
“Overall, we are very pleased with the test results of IU-Notify,” said David Selby, IU Kokomo Chief of Police. “We continue to encourage all persons associated with the campus to update their contact information in the system.”
Users can log onto the IU OneStart portal at https://onestart.iu.edu/my2-prd/portal/104181 to update their contact information.
IU Notify is the integrated communications system that would be used in the event of an emergency or critical incident on campus. The system allows customized messages that would be activated for an emergency or incident that involved or threatened death or serious injury to people, or damage to, or significant disruption of, university operations. The emergency notification system will be used to announce and provide guidance in an emergency or critical incident and to communicate relevant updates.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
