IU commercial filmed on Kokomo campus

KOKOMO, Ind.—A student recruitment commercial, shot at IU Kokomo on January 29, will be used to promote several Indiana University’s regional campuses. Employing local students and university staff as models, the commercial will be broadcast locally starting around the third week of February. It will run on cable networks MTV, TBS, TNT, TNN and ESPN in Howard County, as well as Logansport, Noblesville, Peru, Tipton and Wabash. To make the 30-second spot, the crew of Mike Yonts Film, Inc. spent several hours shooting brief sequences, in which the models walked in front of IU Kokomo’s Hunt Hall or through Alumni Hall in the Kelley Student Center. The footage will be teamed with interior scenes shot at IUPUI and a voiceover message that promotes the small classes and individual attention possible at IU’s regional campuses. “At least three other regional campuses have expressed interest in using the regional spot that features the IU Kokomo campus,” said campus Director of Communications and Marketing Anne-Marie Damler. “In the spring, film crews will visit those campuses and get footage to be incorporated into the commercial. In the mean time, Hunt Hall will serves as a placeholder [scene] in the commercial.” Damler said IU Kokomo was chosen for the initial filming, in part, “because Hunt Hall does not yet have mature trees in front of it. That made it easier to create a ‘nonseasonal’ look,” needed so that the commercial will remain appropriate for broadcast through the summer. To further disguise the season, models dressed in spring clothing. With the outdoor temperature in the 30s, students dashed for heavy coats between takes. The models were also advised to hold their breath during actual filming, so that fogged breath wouldn’t give away the weather conditions. Outdoor scenes had to be framed carefully to shoot above the 4–5 inches of snow on the ground, and flakes from the previous night’s snowfall had to be brushed off the columns of Hunt Hall. Student models included Stephen Miller of Bringhurst, Ranelle Royal of Peru, Cory Jones of Russiaville, Bradley Mitchell of Sharpsville, Jeanie Savage of Tipton, Krystle Baker of Walton, and Kokomo residents Donald Andrews, Sabina Kedhi, Jonathan Kenworthy, Erica Markiewicz, Richard Mills, Kristin Pollard, Jessica Sanchez, Corey Swart and Matthew Townsend. Former IU Kokomo student Katy Howe of Michigantown served as a production assistant. She recently completed a six-month internship at Walt Disney World, working a residential community advisor for visiting international students. She took classes at IU Kokomo before graduating from IU Bloomington in 2002. Katy is the daughter of Eva Howe, senior purchasing assistant for IU Kokomo. David Rust of the IU Office of Communications and Marketing in Bloomington provided university assistance during the filming. The project brought Rust back together with director Mike Yonts, his former IU classmate. The two had co-produced student films at IUB years ago.
