Seek financial aid help on College Goal Sunday, IU Kokomo officials urge

February 3, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.---Three administrators with the IU Kokomo Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will share their expertise as volunteers on College Goal Sunday, February 13. From 2--4 p.m. on that day, at 34 sites around the state, college-bound students can receive advice and assistance in applying for government scholarships and other financial support, and in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Karen Gallatin will assist at the Kokomo College Goal Sunday event, held at Ivy Tech State College. John Delaney will be a presenter at the Logansport site, Room L 117 in Eastgate Plaza. Jackie Kennedy-Fletcher will volunteer at an Indianapolis site.

"We believe that College Goal Sunday is very important," Delaney said. "So many students don't know that they are eligible for college financial aid, or they find out that they're eligible too late to apply for aid."

Students seeking federal and state grants, loans, and scholarships must complete the FAFSA form and must submit it to the federal processor by a March 10 deadline, Delaney explained. College Goal Sunday is scheduled each year to move applicants toward that end.

Students who attend any of the College Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed evaluation form will be entered in a drawing for one of three educational prizes of $300 each.

Students age 23 or younger should attend with a parent or guardian. They should bring their parents' completed IRS 2004 1040 tax return, W-2 form, or other 2004 income and benefits information. Students who are 24 years or age or older, or who are married or have dependents may attend alone and bring their own completed tax and income information. Families needing assistance from a Spanish interpreter, sign language interpreter, or who may have other special needs should call (800) 992-2076.

College Goal Sunday is a charitable collaboration involving the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association, in cooperation with the Learn More Resource Center, the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI), and the Twenty-first Century Scholars program. College Goal Sunday is co-funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., Lumina Foundation for Education, and USA Funds, three Indiana-based non-profits with a particular interest in higher education.
