Campus musicians to play at North Woods Commons

KOKOMO, Ind.---Several Indiana University Kokomo students will perform in the IU Kokomo Howard County Community Band March 2 at North Woods Commons senior community. In its first public appearance for 2005, the band will play such selections as "The Star Spangled Banner," the classic Spanish showpiece for brass "Amparito Roca," "Hogan's Heroes March," "Flight of Valor," and music from the scores of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Music Man." Kokomo High School (KHS) band director Eric Thornbury conducts the Community Band, assisted by Cindy Ison, lecturer in music at IU Kokomo. This year's 40 band performers come from both the campus and community, drawn by the opportunity to "just have some fun" playing together, Ison said. "There are no auditions. If you have an old instrument in the closet that you haven't played for years, dust it off and join us." The band practices each Wednesday from 6--9 p.m. in the band room of KHS South Campus, with the aim of at least one major public concert in mid-spring. Listed by instrument, hometown and academic major, the IU Kokomo student musicians are Flute: Debbie Bricker, Kokomo, University Division; Elizabeth Funk, Galveston, nursing; Stephanie Head, Galveston, University Division; Danielle Kimbrough, Windfall, University Division. Clarinet: Jenny Glassburn, Russiaville, nursing; Emily Hibler, Kokomo, University Division. French horn: Sarah Greene, Kokomo, University Division; Brad Glass, Windfall, University Division. Saxophone: Stephanie Hill, Kokomo, criminal justice. Tuba: Aaron Scheibelhut, Kokomo, University Division; Jeremiah Thompson, Kokomo, University Division. Trumpet: Dani Sexton, Kokomo, University Division; Lindsey Swyers, Kokomo, sociology. All but Kimbrough and Glass took the option of receiving college credit in humanities for their participation.
