KOKOMO, Ind.—The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has awarded a $5,500 Sasakawa Fellowship to Associate Professor of English Nadene Keene of Indiana University Kokomo. The fellowship will support Keene’s participation in the National Faculty Development Institute on “Incorporating Japanese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum,” to be held at San Diego State University from June 1–23.

Designed for faculty without prior experience in Japanese studies, the institute will allow faculty to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists, and journalists about Japanese civilization, history, language, business, and education. Twenty fellows were selected for the 2006 program.

Keene plans to use information and materials gathered during the institute to enhance her literature and humanities courses, which often spotlight non-western authors and viewpoints. “I will share knowledge and methods of teaching Japanese culture with my colleagues via a faculty “brown bag” lunch, sponsored by the IU Kokomo Center for Teaching Learning and Assessment,” she added.

“I’m excited because I love learning about new cultures,” Keene said. “I also love having the opportunity to devote three solid weeks to exploring this culture, writings, art, and so on. It’s not often that a faculty member has the luxury of three uninterrupted weeks of study.”
