Visit Scotland with IU Kokomo
February 23, 2007
KOKOMO, Ind.—Join travelers from Indiana University Kokomo for an 11-day trip to Scotland on July 24–August 3. Professors Robert Strikwerda and Terri Bourus, working with IUPUI professor Erik Lindseth, will lead students, alumni, and community members on the study abroad tour.
The trip includes a visit to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, in time for that city’s annual Festival of Visual Arts and the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival. (See details at http://www.edinburgh-festivals.com.) Stops are also planned at the beautiful university town of St. Andrew’s, the birthplace of golf. The group will travel to the battlefield of Culloden in the legendary highlands of Scotland near Inverness, and then travel by train to Glasgow. Other trip sites include Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood House, Linlithgow Palace, Loch Leven, Dunfirmline Castle, and Dryburgh Abbey.
The trip cost of $2,600 includes air fare, accommodations, daily breakfasts, four dinners (including a Medieval banquet), entrance fees, and travel by bus and by train throughout Scotland. “It’s one of the best bargains I have seen [for touring Scotland] during the peak of its tourist season,” said Erik Lindseth. “The weather will be at its best all year, and I say this from having lived in Edinburgh for six years.”
To enhance their first-hand experiences of Scottish culture and history, participants can enroll in any of three pre-trip summer session classes, taught by Strikwerda, Bourus, and Lindseth. Course titles are H399 and F200: “Tartans, Bagpipes, and Cloned Sheep;” L383: “Early Scottish Literature, Shakespeare, and Macbeth;" and H425: “The Scotland of Mary, Queen of Scots.” The deadline to register for the courses is March 20 and applications for the trip must be received no later April 11. Class fees are separate from the cost of the trip.
