Indiana University Kokomo to offer self-defense class for women
February 13, 2009
Kokomo, Indiana - Possessing self-defense skills is critical to a woman facing an attacker. Indiana University Kokomo is offering a three-night class to teach women necessary techniques for confrontational situations.
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) instruction will take place March 2 and 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. and March 6, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Kelley Student Center, room 130. This is open to all women in the community, age 16 or older, and is limited to 15 participants.
The course will be taught by certified instructors David Selby, IU Kokomo police chief, and Kathryn Widman, coordinator of programming and applied learning. Selby has trained more than 2,000 women through this national program. R.A.D.’s philosophy is that self defense should be easy to learn, easy to retain, and relatively easy to employ during real confrontational situations. The course includes lecture, discussion, and self-defense techniques.
No prior experience or training is required for those interested in taking the class, and participants don’t have to be “in shape.” The cost is $15 per person. The deadline to register is Thursday, February 26, and can be done by contacting Widman at (765) 455-9491, or by e-mail to kwidman@iuk.edu.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
