Band concert to feature Indiana University Kokomo students, community members

February 18, 2009

Kokomo, Ind. - Selections from The Wonderful World of Disney and more will come to life on Wednesday, March 4, during a performance by the Indiana University Kokomo and Howard County Community Band. The event, beginning at 7 p.m., will take place in the Kokomo High School (KHS) Auditorium and is free to the public.

Of the nearly 50 band members, nine are students taking the class for academic credit at IU Kokomo. The mission of the band is to provide a venue for people to continue to utilize their instrumental music ability in a challenging, rewarding, and fun atmosphere. Eric Thornbury, band director, said its members range in age from16 to 82, and includes a number of area high school students, as well as retired music teachers.

“It is an awesome chance for high school and college students to sit alongside adult musicians,” said Thornbury. “This is the best message on how music is something you can enjoy your entire life, and many do.”

In addition to performing a number of Disney compositions, the band will also play selections from Barnum and Bailey’s Favorites, Fate of the Gods, and Raider’s of the Lost Ark.

Those interested in joining the IU Kokomo/Howard County Community Band are welcome to attend band sessions each Wednesday through May, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., in the KHS band room. Thornbury can be reached via e-mail at ethornbury@kokomo.k12.in.us for more information, or by contacting the IU Kokomo Office of the Registrar at (765)455-9358.
