February 25, 2009
KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo men’s intramural basketball team this Sunday heads to the local championship game for a chance at the Division II title. A first-place showing in the Men’s Winter Basketball League through the Kokomo Parks and Recreation will mean the sixth such championship for the campus. The undefeated team plays at 2 p.m. at Washington Elementary.
Ryan Boucher, a sophomore at IU Kokomo, said playing on the intramural team gives him something extra to do that is competitive and fun. Boucher, a forward, looks for the win that will give the team a chance to move to Division I to face “better competition.” Other IU Kokomo students on the team include Andrew Amos, J.C. Barnett, Austin Davis, Tom Henning, Kevin Nystrom, Vince Lorenz, and Lemuel Wright.
Community members Don Smith and Mike Karickhoff have coached the team this winning season with a 10-0 record, plus taking first place in the tournament last weekend.
The intramural basketball team is sponsored by the Student Athletic Board (SAB). The SAB is a group that works to promote recreational and intramural athletic events on and off campus for students.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana, bringing quality education to area residents. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
