“Fluxus” art works showcased at IU Kokomo Art Gallery

February 26, 2009

KOKOMO, Ind. – Art lovers will have the chance to experience first-hand the art style known as “Fluxus”, as the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery showcases “Ken Friedman: 73 Events.” The show will run from March 2 to April 10, with an opening reception on Wednesday, March 11, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Fluxus, which is Latin for “to flow,” is an international network of artists, composers, and designers who blend different media and disciplines. The idea behind the style is using a “do it yourself approach,” and blending art with music.

“Every show brings a particular style, whether it’s performance or visual,” said Whitney Bair-Sneed, lecturer in fine arts and director of the art gallery. Bair-Sneed also mentioned how the idea was for viewers to “not be passively looking” at pieces of art and how perceptions of a piece can be changed depending on moods.

The Friedman show will consist of words on 73 pages hung in the Art Galley for attendees to read. However, the pages won’t be structured like a poem or narratively, but will be more closely related to musical scores that can be performed.

Ken Friedman is a practicing artist and designer active in Fluxus, with work represented in museums and galleries around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Hood museum of Art at Dartmouth College. In addition to his exhibitions, Friedman has also been widely published in peer-reviewed academic journals, as well as editing several Fluxus publications.

Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesdays until 8 p.m.; Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. Persons without campus parking permits should follow signs to visitor parking.
