Indiana University Kokomo to host county science fair
February 10, 2009
KOKOMO, Ind. Local students in grades 5 through 12 will be showcasing projects in the fields of science during the upcoming Howard County Science Fair on Saturday, February 21, at the Indiana University Kokomo Kelley Student Center.
Beginning at 8 a.m., participating students will have the opportunity to display projects they have worked on with their teachers. Judging will take place from 9 a.m. until noon by a panel of IU Kokomo faculty, students from the Pre-Professional Club, and others. The fair will resume after a lunch break, and will then be open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m., free of charge.
Top students in the Senior Division will be re-judged during a Super Judging event in the afternoon, while the Natural, Information, and Mathematical Sciences Department of IU Kokomo will hold various programs in Hunt Hall for younger participants. A short awards ceremony will follow at 3 p.m., where winning students will receive a savings bond and a plaque.
The Howard County Science Fair is the perfect place to start in research and provide students with opportunities that can open doors not only in the field of science, says Marcia Gillette, senior lecturer in chemistry, about students getting involved in the event. It also gives students the opportunity to work on their writing skills, as well as public speaking skills, through presentation of their projects.
The HCSF is sponsored by several community donors, including Haynes International. Howard County students interested in participating must register by Monday, February 16. For more information, visit www.haynesintl.com/HCSF/HCSFhome.html.
