KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo will be the only stop east of the Mississippi for ARTS for the PARKS 2003, an exhibit of oil paintings capturing scenes from the U.S. National Parks. The top 100 paintings from the juried international competition will be on display at the IU Kokomo Art Gallery through February 15. Admission is free. Depicting grand mesas and forests, lighthouses, wildlife and people, many of the works are remarkable for their realism and color. ARTS for the PARKS is “the type of exhibit that appeals to a wide audience,” said Art Gallery Director Minda Douglas. “Since Indiana doesn’t have all of the types of vistas represented in this show, it offers an opportunity to learn about the parks. Hopefully, it will inspire families to travel to the various parks portrayed.” The 100 canvases represent work by artists from 35 states, 3 Canadian provinces and 3 countries. The exhibit is funded in part by grants from the Community Foundation of Howard County and the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, along with a donation from IU alumnus Richard Ford of Wabash. The Gallery’s “Artist Spotlight” windows at the Gallery entrance have been planned to complement the exhibit, Douglas said. Spotlight artist Cynthia Blasingham of Indianapolis received a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission to create a series of images based on the Indiana wetlands. “This will bring an aspect of Indiana to the exhibit,” said Douglas. Terry Lacy of Delphi will exhibit watercolors completed while he traveled in the western United States. In a related activity, IU Kokomo Assistant Professor of Biology Michael Finkler will speak on conservation Wednesday, February 5, at 1 p.m. in Kresge auditorium. A reception in the Art Gallery will follow his lecture. The Art Gallery has for sale unframed, open-edition prints of six current ARTS for the PARKS works, as well as boxed notecards featuring paintings from the 2001 exhibit. The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is located in the Kelley Student Center on the Indiana University Kokomo campus at 2300 S. Washington, Kokomo. Hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. For more information, call (765) 455-9523 or visit www.iuk.edu/artgallery.
