KOKOMO, Ind.—Avoid the winter blahs! In Continuing Studies classes at IU Kokomo, you can meet new people and learn new skills that chase the cold weather doldrums away. Beginning Sign Language
Learn to communicate with the hearing impaired using the American Sign Language method. Designed for family members, co-workers, aides to professionals, and others. Book required. Tuesdays, January 27–March 16, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $109
Computer Basics I
Get to know the main parts of a computer and what they do, learn simple computer terms and find your way around the keyboard. This hands-on class will give you the foundation needed to move on to other computer classes. Mondays and Wednesdays, February 2–11, 9–11 a.m., AND Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 3–12, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Fee: $109
Spanish for Beginners
A first step to learn Spanish for work, travel or friendship, this class focuses on pronunciation, everyday vocabulary, phrase usage and basic grammar. Book required. Day or evening classes available. Mondays, February 2–March 22, 10 a.m.–noon, AND Mondays, February 2-–March 22, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $129
Pilates Matwork
Achieve a balance between strength and flexibility using Pilates-based matwork. Movements will focus on the core muscles of the abdomen and back. Students are asked to bring a towel and exercise mat to each class. It is recommended that students dress comfortably and not consume food 1–2 hours before class. Mondays and Wednesdays, February 2–18, 6–7 p.m. Fee: $98
Workplace Health and Safety
Gain an understanding how OSHA rules and regulations are applied in the workplace and how to use the proper preventative measures. Mondays, February 2–March 8, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $149
Introduction to Fashion Design
This course offers a basic understanding of the evolution of garments and the elements of design, such as color, textile, cuts, balance and line. Mondays, February 2–23, 6-8 p.m. Fee: $79
How to Get Published
Budding authors wanting to be published can learn about the steps necessary and the people involved. The class will examine self-publishing, distribution, marketing and promotion, licensing, copyrights, ISBN numbers and bar coding. Mondays, February 2–23, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $99
A+ Certification
This 40-hour course covers software/hardware installations, system optimization, PC troubleshooting and customer service issues. Prerequisite: six months’ computer system support experience or equivalent. Book required. Mondays and Fridays, February 2–March 5, 5:30–9:30 p.m. Fee: $1,040
Getting to Know Your Computer
Perhaps you have just purchased or are considering purchasing your first computer. This two-hour course looks at hardware, software, and connecting to the Internet and the World Wide Web. If you know absolutely nothing about a computer, then this course is for you. Tuesday, February 3, 7:45–9:45 p.m. Fee: $35
Wedding and Prom Flowers
Learn how to construct bridal and bridesmaids’ bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres. Dried, silk and fresh flowers are discussed and used. Tuesdays, February 3–24, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $99
General Law I
This course acquaints students with several legal areas, including the legal system, legal thinking, and basic rights and duties. Key concepts include ethics, legislation, trial and appellate courts, and state and federal courts. Tuesdays, February 3–April 20, 6:15–9:15 p.m. Fee: $250
Civil Procedure
This course will focus on the procedural aspects of both Indiana and federal rules of trial procedure. Topics will include drafting complaints, answers, counterclaims, interrogatories and other discovery tools. Prerequisites: General Law I and II. Tuesdays, February 3–April 20, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $250
Beginning Photoshop®
Familiarize yourself with the capabilities, interface and palettes of Adobe Photoshop®, the world’s most powerful image editing software. Learn how to utilize the basic, most popular features of this program by designing graphics and editing pictures. Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 3–12, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $239
Painting with Watercolors for Beginners
Using basic drawing or watercolor skills, you can paint from various subject matter to develop color knowledge and mixing techniques. Demonstrations will show how to use different materials with watercolors to achieve desired effects. No experience necessary. Supply list available with paid registration. Wednesdays, February 4–25, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $89
Introduction to Human Resources: Generalist and Specialist
This course reviews human resources policies and procedures, the Family Medical Leave Act, customer service and communication with upper management. Wednesdays, February 4–25, 6-8 p.m. Fee: $99
Photography Fundamentals
Beginning photographers can learn to take pictures with confidence. Required equipment includes a 35mm adjustable camera (without film), a built-in light meter or hand-held meter, and the camera owner’s manual. Wednesdays, February 4–25, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $99
The Measure of Success
Methods taught in this class can help balance your career vision and goals with personal responsibilities, and set priorities to maximize your physical and emotional wellness. Thursday, February 5, 6-8 p.m. Fee: $75
Wills, Trusts and Estates
This course emphasizes practical applications in probating an estate, including use of filings and pleadings. It also reviews adoption procedures, the Indiana Inheritance Tax, the Federal Estate Tax and other death taxes. Students will learn the basic concepts of wills and trusts and the drafting of typical legal documents concerning estate planning and administration. Thursdays, February 5–April 22, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $250
Songwriting Workshop
Focused on music for guitars, this class offers concepts that carry over into songwriter for any instrument and in any musical style. Students may bring an instrument to this interactive workshop, although an instrument is not required. Saturdays, February 7–28, noon–2 p.m. Fee: $75
Marketing and Public Relations
Provides background skills and strategy for the non-profit organization to market services, programs and ideas. Basic marketing techniques and elements will be reviewed. Get the right message to the right people at the right time at the right price. Wednesdays, February 11 and 18, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $89
Effective Time Management
Set goals and achieve them by discovering how to schedule and prioritize tasks, manage interruptions and recognize obstacles to achieving goals on time. Thursday, February 12, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $75

Individuals who want to know more about computer operating systems, file sharing and basic shortcut operating functions should try this intermediate-level course. Mondays and Wednesdays, February 16–25, 9–11 a.m., AND Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 17–26, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Fee: $109
Intermediate Photoshop®
Learn some of the standard tricks of the trade in the graphic design field with the world’s best image editing software, Adobe Photoshop®. Using basic tools along with some advanced tools, you will create stunning visual masterpieces. Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 17–26, 7–9 p.m. Fee: $179
Computers and Law Office Applications
Learn how to control page setup and layout, use styles and tables, create legal templates and forms. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word®. Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 17–March 4, 7:45–9:45 p.m. Fee: $165
Personality and Listening Skills

Dreamweaver®
Dreamweaver® is the premier Web site–building program from Macromedia®. Learn the essentials of Web design: creating pages, incorporating images and links, setting up forms and more. You will be creating your own Web sites by the end of this class. Book required. Saturday, February 21, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Fee: $159
HTML I and HTML II
These classes will provide the background needed to develop Web pages from the ground up, beginning with basic HTML “tags” and exploring their functions and features. Students will receive hands-on experience putting together a basic page. From there, learn how to add graphics and concepts such as formatting text and creating tables to provide a uniform look to the page. Instruction will also touch on basic networking concepts and how they relate to Web sites. Book required. HTML I: Saturdays, February 21 and 28, 8 a.m.–noon. Fee: $159. HTML II: Saturdays, March 13 and 20, 8 a.m.–noon. Fee: $159
Managing for Success
You’ll benefit from practical tips on effective time management, increasing meeting productivity, crystallizing and focusing goals, and developing leadership skills. Thursday, February 26, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $75
