KOKOMO, Ind.—The late Judge John T. Grimes of Kokomo will be recognized during a Tuesday, February 3, reception, from 5–6:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall of IU Kokomo’s Kelley Student Center. Grimes, who died in 1990, became a Kokomo city judge in 1972, the first African American elected to that office. Local historian Bill Hall will recount Grimes’ story during the reception; members of Grimes’ family plan to attend. Open to the public, the event is sponsored by the IU Kokomo Alumni Association, the IU Neal-Marshall Alumni Club and the Office of Campus Climate. Call (765) 455-9359 for additional information. The reception also marks the return of the photo exhibit, “The Black Experience at Indiana University,” to Alumni Hall from February 2–13. Admission to the exhibit is free. Earning a bachelor of political science degree in 1950, John Grimes was among IU Kokomo’s first black graduates. He later served on the campus’ Advisory Board. He received his law degree from IU Bloomington in 1952. Grimes practiced law in Kokomo for 37 years and was also a city attorney and Howard County deputy prosecutor. Among his many community involvements, Grimes was known for mentoring young African American males, said Director of Campus Climate Catherine Barnes. “He would get them thinking about going to college,” she said.
