Free lecture looks at assessing student learning

KOKOMO, Ind.—Susan Hatfield, Ph.D., director of assessment at Minnesota’s Winona State University, will speak on assessment of student learning during a free lecture at IU Kokomo on Thursday, January 29, in Kresge Auditorium. Titled “Doing Unto Ourselves Before We Are Done Unto by Others,” Hatfield’s 7 p.m. presentation is free and open to the public. Her visit is funded by the Addison Locke Roache Memorial Fund. A consultant-evaluator with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Hatfield has been at Winona State University since 1981. During that time she has taught in the communication studies department and served for nine years as chair of that department. Trained as a social scientist, her primary research interests are in family communication, organizational communication and institutional effectiveness. She is a frequent speaker and consultant in the area of assessment of student learning. Hatfield has received a Kellogg Fellowship as one of the Emerging Leaders in Higher Education, been named Outstanding College Teacher in the State of Minnesota, and was awarded a $1.3 million U.S. Department of Education Title III grant to develop assessment software.
