IU Kokomo speaker to examine roots of radical Islamic thought January 25

KOKOMO, Ind.—International scholar of Islamic culture Johannes J. G. Jansen, Ph.D., will speak Tuesday, January 25, in a 7 p.m. presentation at Indiana University Kokomo. A professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands, Jansen will address the historic roots of “The Radical Islamic Ideology.” and those ideas' development through present day The public is invited to attend the free lecture in Kresge Auditorium in the Kelley Student Center; a reception will follow. From 1979–1982, Jansen directed a Dutch research center in Cairo, Egypt, focused on Arabic culture and Egyptian archaeology. He has authored numerous books on the Arab and Muslim worlds, including The Dual Nature Of Islamic Fundamentalism. The History/Political Science Club of Indiana University will sponsor Jansen's appearance in conjunction with the campus' American Democracy Project (ADP) Committee. ADP is a national, multi-campus initiative that seeks to offer undergraduates an intellectual and experiential understanding of citizen education. Indiana University Kokomo is located west of U.S. 31 on the south side of Kokomo, Ind. From U.S. 31, turn west on Lincoln Road. Take Lincoln to Washington Street and turn right (north). The campus is on the east side Washington. Turn into first drive to reach the visitor parking garage. Parking on the lower level of the garage is free for this event to visitors without an IU parking pass.
