Kokomo Mayor proclaims IU Kokomo Life Sciences Week

January 24, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Mayor Matt McKillip has proclaimed January 22–29 as Indiana University Kokomo Life Sciences Week, and encouraged fellow citizens to join in celebrations of the sciences planned at the campus. During the week, all eight IU campuses will draw attention to the university's involvement in scientific research and teaching that advance understanding of human life and Indiana's significant economic connections to the life sciences.

Presenting his proclamation (see text below) at an all-campus convocation Friday, January 21, Mayor McKillip stated that IU Kokomo has provided "hundreds of health care professionals to the community through its School of Nursing, Division of Allied Health Sciences, (and) numerous science and pre-professional degree programs." Many area science teachers earned their degrees through IU Kokomo's Division of Education, McKillip said, while the campus is "looking to the future needs of the elderly in Kokomo" with the recent introduction of a bachelor's degree program in Health and Aging.

The mayor also saluted IU Kokomo faculty members conducting research in the life sciences that "is critical to the future of our community," and IU alumni who "live, work, and volunteer in Kokomo, and thus play a vital role in the success of our community."
