Third McGowan Award approved for IU Kokomo

January 26, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—For the third consecutive year, the McGowan Charitable Foundation has approved a full-tuition scholarship for a student of the Indiana University Kokomo School of Business. Dean Niranjan Pati, Ph.D., said business faculty will select one Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) candidate to receive the $16,191 award for the 2006–2007 academic year. The award recipient will be announced in May.

“The McGowan Foundation has been very generous to award the School of Business a total of $42,389 in the last three award cycles. Conferral of this award in the face of a stiff competition says a lot about the quality of our business programs,” Pati said.

Erin Wittmeyer of Plymouth was IU Kokomo’s first McGowan Scholar, receiving a $15,098 award toward her M.B.A. degree in 2004–2005. The following year, Robert C. Jones of Elwood, an undergraduate student double majoring in accounting and economics/finance, received the McGowan Scholar Award. It covered full tuition up to $11,100 for his senior year at IU Kokomo.

Eligibility for the McGowan Scholar Award is open only to schools of business accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International—as is IU Kokomo's—or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.

William G. McGowan, who founded MCI Communications in 1968 and led the company until his death in 1992, established the McGowan Charitable Fund. McGowan attended Harvard University graduate school on a scholarship set up much like the McGowan Scholar Award.
