IU Kokomo presents film Gandhi
January 26, 2006
KOKOM, Ind.—The film
Gandhi recounts the life of the man whose non-violent resistance movement helped free India from British imperial rule in 1947 and inspired the later work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.
IU Kokomo will present free showings of Gandhi on Thursday and Friday, February 2 and 3, at 7 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.
Winner of eight Academy Awards in 1983, Gandhi “still has that bold-faced honesty which we find so often lacking in many contemporary films,” according to Joshua Tyler for Filmcritic.com.
Critics universally praised Ben Kingsley’s performance as the soft-spoken but unwavering Mohandas K. Gandhi. Kingsley’s father’s family came from Gujarat, the same Indian state Gandhi was from and where part of the movie was filmed. When Kingsley put on his character’s make-up, many natives reportedly thought that the actor was Gandhi’s ghost.
The 188-minute film also stars Martin Sheen, Candice Bergen, and renowned British character actors Trevor Howard, John Gielgud, and John Mills. It is rated PG.
Gandhi is the fourth of six movies being presented on campus this academic year, in recognition of the campus’ six decades of existence. To see the full schedule of films and learn about other activities celebrating IU Kokomo’s 60th Anniversary, visit http://www.iuk.edu/events .
