Bourus discusses Bard at Don’s Books on January 20

January 5, 2007

KOKOMO, Ind.—On Saturday, January 20, Don’s Books in Kokomo will host Indiana University Kokomo Assistant Professor of English Terri Bourus, Ph.D., for a book signing and informal talk about Shakespeare’s plays. Bourus will sign copies of two books she edited in 2006 for the Sourcebooks Shakespeare Series (Sourcebooks, Inc., Naperville, Ill.) The volumes contain the respective texts of the comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the drama Hamlet, along with histories Bourus wrote about the plays and photos from acclaimed stage and film versions.

The event runs from 1–4 p.m. at Don’s Books, 815 N. Washington St. Manager Robert Holz met Bourus through store employees who are also current and former IU Kokomo students.

The business deals in used and new, special-order books. “Classical literature is a big staple that people, especially students, come in here for—the works of Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Hemingway,” Holz said.

Meeting Bourus could change people’s attitudes toward the classics, he added. “Mark Twain said classic literature consist of works of writing that ‘Everyone praises, and no one reads.’ Terri’s passion for the subject of Shakespeare is captivating, contagious. She makes Shakespeare become human, someone whose works we can relate to. She makes you want to take on the challenge of reading and watching the plays.”

Bourus has presented research on early printed texts of Shakespeare’s work and about teaching the plays to young people at U.S. and global conferences. She addressed the VII World Shakespeare Congress in Brisbane, Australia, last July. Recently, she was invited to participate in the 2007 Oxford University Round Table on Global Education in Great Britain.

Holz sees great potential for additional projects at Don’s Books highlighting faculty speakers or authors from IU Kokomo. “I have a very high regard for the school and its faculty,” he said.
