Indiana University Kokomo prepares for budget cuts
January 8, 2009
Kokomo, Indiana – Indiana University Kokomo plans to offset a reduction in state funding through salary savings. This will not have a direct impact on course offerings, programs, and services offered to students.
The State Budget Agency notified IU President Michael A. McRobbie this week that current year state funding will be decreased by 1 percent – which totals $103,075 for the Kokomo campus. The current fiscal year ends June 30, 2009.
“The campus will be able to absorb this reduction through salary savings,” said Tim Sehr, interim vice chancellor for administration. “There were a number of vacancies at the beginning of the fiscal year, and several of them have not been filled. We have been cautious due to the economic uncertainties.”
This action applies to all IU campuses, schools and administrative offices. President McRobbie stated that while these reductions should be considered as one-time cuts – as opposed to permanent reductions to base budgets – senior administrators should remain flexible and be prepared to make additional spending reductions in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Final actions on future budgets cannot be determined until the state budget is approved later this year.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
