  Jones receives summer fellowship

July 17, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—A $6,000 fellowship from IU Kokomo will allow Assistant Professor of English Scott Jones, Ph.D., to continue research that he started with his doctoral thesis. For the dissertation, “The Role of Electronic Mail in Workplace Writing,” Jones studied six-months worth of e-mails—a total 40 megabytes of data—sent and received by professional writers at an Illinois insurance company.

Under the fellowship, Jones will visit the company’s corporate headquarters again this summer. “The Corporate Communications division has since substantially altered its publications and writing process, so I want to study the changes,” he said. The changes grew out the company’s recent switch to a new e-mail system, tied to a corporate intranet, or private computer network. He will also travel to various libraries to gather print sources.

Just finishing up his first year on the IU Kokomo faculty, Jones has helped develop curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communications, which starts this fall. The degree program brings together course work in writing, communication arts and information technologies. Classes will cover “tools” for technical writing, research design, and visual communication, as well as the study of communication theory and professional practices. Jones said the results of his fellowship study will be “directly applicable to many of my classes.

“I will discuss with students what I observed and hope to develop new assignments and exercises based upon what I learn.”
