Sasso to edit IU Kokomo student newspaper
July 31, 2003 | |||||
STORY MENTIONS STUDENTS FROM FRANKFORT, KOKOMO, AND PERU
KOKOMO, Ind.—Senior English major Elizabeth A. Sasso will serve as managing editor of the IU Kokomo student newspaper, The Correspondent. The bi-weekly publication covers news of students attending both IU Kokomo and the Purdue University School of Technology at Kokomo. A 1999 graduate of Maconaquah High School, Elizabeth is the daughter of John and Patricia Sasso of Peru. She transferred to IU Kokomo after studying journalism at IU Bloomington for three years. Her interests lie in feature writing and “the nitty-gritty proofreading and editing” of journalism, Sasso said. Ultimately, she’d like to work in publishing overseas. Sasso fills the editorship held for the past three years by Christi Hobaugh, who graduated from IU Kokomo in May. “Christi and her staff have built an excellent newspaper, with design and articles that are top notch for a campus this size,” Sasso said. “My goal is to not let that standard slip.” Head photographer Sabina Kedhi of Kokomo, and features editor Wynn Zetterberg and entertainment editor Shamus Driver, both of Frankfort, continue from last year’s staff. They will help with the paper’s continuity, she said. Sasso is contemplating some possible additions to the paper, such as more regular columnists—“like a ‘Dear Abby’ for 20- and 30-year-old college students”—and classified ads. The ads could help students’ communicate specific needs, “rather than posting messages everywhere on campus,” Sasso said. The first issue of The Correspondent under Sasso is expected to be printed August 25, the first day of IU Kokomo’s fall 2003 semester. A callout for additional staff writers and volunteers will be held in early September.
