Mike Mayer In his sixth season as head coach of the Indiana University Men’s Golf program, Mike Mayer is rekindling the fire that brought the Hoosier men’s golf team a Big Ten Championship in 1998. In his past two seasons, Mayer has recruited an impressive group of newcomers. Mayer’s 2001–02 freshman class of Rob Ockenfuss, Jeff Overton and Heath Peters was ranked eighth-best in the nation by Golfstat. Overton’s average of 74.45 in his rookie year was the lowest freshman average in school history; Peters averaged 74.89. In fall 2002, Mayer signed David Butwell, a premier prospect from England’s junior ranks. Butwell, who cards a low round of 64, was recently selected to represent England in international competition. Mayer has coached a Hoosier golfer to All-Big Ten honors in each of his past five seasons, including all-conference players Brent Landry, Steve Wheatcroft and Jeff Overton. During Mayer’s tenure, Indiana golfers have earned 17 Academic All-Big Ten honors, including five in 2003. Mayer spent nine seasons as an assistant coach under Sam Carmichael before taking over the men’s program in the fall of 1998. Mayer was the driving force behind the recent addition of a state-of-the-art, team-only practice facility for IU. A top recruiting tool for the team, the facility features bent grass tees, fairways, bunkers and many large greens. “My number one goal when building the practice facility was to give the players an area where they really want to practice,” Mayer said. “It is now being recognized throughout the country as one of the best in the nation. Nobody in the Big Ten has anything as nice as this.” Before Mayer started his coaching career, he worked as the sports editor for the North Vernon Plain Dealer and Sun as well as a sports writer and columnist for the Bedford Times Mail. He has also served as golf course manager and superintendent at Muscatuck Country Club in North Vernon, Ind. A 1975 graduate of Jennings County High School, Mayer obtained degrees in journalism and English literature from Indiana University in 1987, and went on to receive his master’s degree in sport management from IU in 1998. Mayer also serves as the Director of Golf at Indiana University in charge of the IU golf facility. He is a Class A member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America and a Class A PGA Professional.
