Barbeque at IU Kokomo celebrates IUAA 150th birthday

KOKOMO, Ind.—In celebration of 150 years of service to the university and its alumni, August 2 has been named IU Alumni Association Day. IU alumni around the world will be wearing crimson; participating in online activities, including a puzzle contest with puzzle master and IU alumnus Will Shortz; and attending campus events.

The IU Kokomo Alumni Association (IUKAA) will celebrate on August 26 with a campus-wide barbecue. “IU alumni living in our campus’ 11-county service area are invited to join us at the barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m.,” said Cathy Hightower, IU Kokomo, director of alumni relations and a 1989 IU graduate. “We’ll have live music, great food and even a mechanical bull, sponsored the Office of Student Activities. Whether you attended IU Kokomo or another IU campus, we’d be happy to have you and your family come enjoy the event and meet our students, faculty and staff.”

Alumni are asked to RSVP for the barbecue by August 9, via phone, (765) 455-9411, or e-mail, alumni@iuk.edu.

Close to half of IU Kokomo’s full-time faculty are IU alumni. In the past 30 years, since the Kokomo campus changed from an IU extension center to a full regional campus, it has conferred more than 8,000 degrees.

As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations with more than 460,000 living graduates, the IU Alumni Association (IUAA) strives to connect and engage alumni through programs, services and communications. More than half of IU’s graduates live in Indiana. Thirty-five percent of Indiana’s teachers, 90 percent of its dentists, 64 percent of its optometrists, 40 percent of its physicians and 25 percent of its judges are Indiana University alumni.

Other ways that IU alumni can celebrate, Hightower said, include

• Look up a friend, classmate or professor in the IUAA’s online directory

• Purchase IU gifts and memorabilia at the IUAA’s online store

• Support IU by applying for an IU credit card or requesting an IU license plate through your local license branch

• Share your latest personal or professional news through an alumni publication, such as IU Kokomo’s Messenger

• Join the IU Alumni Association or renew your membership, then join in alumni activities through the campus nearest you. In addition to the IUKAA, north central Indiana alumni can also participate in activities sponsored by the Howard/Tipton County IU Alumni Club and the Cass County Alumni Club.

“Probably the best birthday gift that IU alumni can give themselves is to encourage the next generation of IU students,” Hightower said. “Tell your IU story to a prospective student and their family. Donate to scholarships. Volunteer to mentor a student or recent graduate.” For more information, contact Hightower at the above phone or e-mail or visit www.iuk.edu/alumni.
